Owner-Architect Agreement for University Project

We represented an architecture firm to negotiate an Owner-Architect Agreement with a major U.S. university for the renovation of part of an historic building. The design had to both respect the existing architecture, a blend of mid-century and late-modern styles by notable architects, while creating a contemporary and collaborative environment. The initial concept design phase, funded at the outset, focused on developing a fixed scope, budget, and schedule. Subsequent design phases utilized modified standard AIA contract documents, including AIA Document B101-2017, Agreement Between Owner and Architect, and AIA Document C401-2017, Agreement Between Architect and Consultant, which we helped negotiate. The agreement emphasized a collaborative process with the university’s facilities department and a project working committee composed of faculty and university representatives.
